R. Chalmer Martin

Services for R. Chalmer Martin, 76, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lawrence Free Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.Mr. Martin died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born July 6, 1929, in Jackson County, Kan., the son of Harry B. and Edith Mallory Martin. He graduated from Meriden High School and served as a U.S. Army combat engineer from 1951 until 1953.He graduated from Baker University with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1956, and received a master’s degree in education in school administration from Kansas University in 1958.Mr. Martin taught from 1956 to 1960 in Baldwin, including two years as high school principal. He was superintendent of schools for the Horton school district from 1960 to 1967, when he moved to Lawrence. He taught at Lawrence High School until he retired in 1991. He was named Outstanding Secondary Educator of America in 1975.He was a member of the Lawrence Free Methodist Church, American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14, National Rifle Assn., Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 309, Douglas County Retired Teachers Assn. and the National Education Assn.He married Marilyn Mills on Dec. 26, 1954, in Caney. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two daughters, Deborah Trickey, Muskogee, Okla., and Lesa Tidd, Lawrence; two sisters, Rose Ann Staab, Lakin, and Daisy Kristofek, Bristol, Va.; two brothers, Burley, Kansas City, Kan., and Nelson, Leavenworth; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.The family suggests memorials to the church or Baker University. They may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
