Fred J. Barnes

Services for Fred J. Barnes, 83, Baldwin, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ives Chapel United Methodist Church in Baldwin. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin.Mr. Barnes died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born Feb. 9, 1923, in rural Miami County, the son of James C. and Mattie L. Jennings Barnes. He attended school in Miami County. He lived in Paola and moved to Baldwin in 1958.Mr. Barnes served as a special vehicle operator in the U.S. Army during World War II in the southwest Pacific theater. He worked for a year at Pure Gold Dairy in Paola and then worked at the Gas Service Co. in Paola for more than 35 years, retiring in 1985. After retirement, he worked at Dillons in Lawrence and the Baldwin City Market. He also worked at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Baldwin.He was a member of the American Legion in Baldwin and Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles Lodge in Lawrence.Survivors include his wife, Stella, of the home; three daughters, Mary Higgins, Lawrence, Phyllis Kreighbaum, Chanute, and Rita Brecheisen, Baldwin; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Baldwin.The family suggests memorials to Ives Chapel United Methodist Church or the American Heart and Lung Assn., in care of the funeral home, P.O.
