Helen Irene Tuttle 1922 - 2006
Services for Helen Irene Tuttle, 83, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will be later in Kansas City, Kan.Miss Tuttle died Monday, March 20, 2006, at Presbyterian Manor.She was born April 10, 1922, in Newton, the daughter of Ralph and Helen Harley Tuttle. She received master's and bachelor's degrees from Pittsburg State University and a doctorate from the University of Mississippi. She moved to Lawrence in 1987.Miss Tuttle served in the U.S. Air Corps for three years as a recruiter. She was dean of women and dean of student campus life at Ripon College in Ripon, Wis., for 19 years.She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon for three years. She was a charter member of Women's Memorial and a 50-year member of Eastern Star. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, worked with Lawrence Welcome Wagon and was a reporter for the Douglas County Historical Society. She also belonged to a quilting group and a book club in Lawrence.Survivors include a sister, Peggy Cooper, Lawrence; and a brother, Harley Tuttle, Kansas City, Kan.The family suggests memorials to Presbyterian Manor of Lawrence or a charity of the donor's choice, sent in care of the mortuary.
