Gertrude L. Courtney

Mass of Christian Burial for Gertrude L. Courtney, 98, Winchester, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph of the Valley Church in Lecompton. Burial will follow in Springdale Friends Cemetery in Springdale.Mrs. Courtney died Thursday, March 16, 2006, at Jefferson County Geriatric Center in Winchester.She was born Feb. 21, 1908, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Charles Leslie and Rosa Lena Karst Coffman. She graduated as a registered nurse from St. John’s School of Nursing in Leavenworth.Mrs. Courtney was a homemaker. She was a former member of St. Joseph of the Valley Church and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tonganoxie.She married Charles Edwin Courtney on Sept. 5, 1933, in Platte City, Mo. He died Feb. 20, 1954.A son, William R. Courtney, died earlier, and two grandsons died earlier.Survivors include two sons, Robert E. Courtney Sr., and Charles R. Courtney, both of McLouth; two daughters, Shirley A. Breeden, Salinas, Calif., and Sharon L. Edmonds, Oskaloosa; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa.The family suggests memorials to Jefferson County Hospice, Meals on Wheels or the Sacred Heart Building Fund, sent in care of the funeral home, P.O.
