Bryce D. Stallard

Services for Bryce D. Stallard, 79, Topeka, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Southern Baptist Church in Topeka. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery in Williamstown.Mr. Stallard died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at Midland Hospice House.He was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Topeka, the son of Hobart McKinley and Lottie Gertrude Stallard. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence in 1944. He received a bachelor’s degree from Baker University in 1950, a Master’s in Education Administration degree from Kansas University in 1960 and a Doctor of Education degree from Oklahoma State University in 1971.Mr. Stallard served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He taught mathematics and coached high school basketball at various schools. He worked as a high school principal in Goodland and Olathe. He was also a superintendent in Wichita, Norton, Satanta, Omaha, Neb., and Fairbanks, Alaska, and retired in 1991. He continued to substitute teach in the Topeka school district after he retired until February of 2006. He received the Kansas State Coach of the Year award in 1960 after coaching Washburn Rural High School to the state basketball championship. He was a member of American Legion Post 400 in Topeka and the Lions, Rotary, Optimist and Kiwanis clubs. He was a 32nd Degree Mason.He married Lois M. Jones on June 5, 1949, in Frankfort. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Mark, Overland Park; three daughters, Sheryl Mathis and Sondra Blessing, both of Lawrence, and Penny Helmick, Topeka; two brothers, Alvis, Topeka, and David, Derby; and seven grandchildren.Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, where the family will receive them from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.The family suggests memorials to Midland Hospice Care Inc., 200 S.W.
