Richard Hall Colyer

A memorial service for Richard Hall Colyer, 74, Bellingham, Wash., and formerly of Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church.Mr. Colyer died April 19, 2006, in a sea-diving accident near Port Hardy, British Columbia.He was born May 6, 1931, in Detroit, the son of Dr. Raymond Green Colyer and Harriet Norine Cornelius.Mr. Colyer received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Wayne State University. He later received a Ph.D. in modern literature from the University of Iowa.He served in the U.S. Navy as a naval intelligence officer in northern Europe. He was a professor emeritus of English from 1967 to 2001 at Kansas University. He moved to Bellingham after he retired.Survivors include two daughters, Melissa L. McCauley, Lawrence, and Catherine Colyer Dyke, Columbus, Ohio; a brother, David Colyer, Traverse City, Mich.; and five grandchildren.The family suggests memorials to the Whatcom Museum of History and Art, 121 Prospect St., Bellingham, WA 98225.
