James Allen Vequist 1950 - 2006
A celebration of life for James Allen Vequist, 56, Lawrence, will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Kansas University Alumni Center.Mr. Vequist died Saturday, July 22, 2006, at his home. He was born Feb. 17, 1950, in Lawrence, the son of David George and Betty Mayne Vequist. He attended Pittsburg State University and received a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University. Mr. Vequist worked as media director at Fort Hays State University until 1996, when he returned to Lawrence to become director of Budig Hall at Kansas University. He assisted with the design and installation of three large computer mediated classrooms in Budig Hall. He was a professional photographer. He owned and operated Vequist Photography studio in Hays for 20 years. He was an active member of the Kansas Professional Photographers Assn., where he served as president from 1999 to 2000. He received many awards for his photography and multimedia presentations. Mr. Vequist enjoyed woodworking, mountain biking, camping and home improvement projects. He is survived by his wife, Marciana, of the home; his mother, Betty Vequist, Pittsburg; a son, Matthew, Lawrence; a daughter, Sunny Vequist, Lawrence; three stepchildren; two brothers, John, Stockholm, Sweden, and Steven, Wichita; a sister, Cathy Vequist, Jupiter, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Demitri and Alexia. His father, David George Vequist Jr., and a brother, David George Vequist III, both died earlier. The family suggests memorials to the Kansas Forest Service, Community Forestry Program, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence.
