Galen Royce Fiss

Services for Galen Royce Fiss, 75, Leawood, Kan., will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kansas City, Mo.Mr. Fiss died Monday, July 17, 2006.He was born July 10, 1931, in Johnson, Kan., the son of Wilma Tucker and Herman Royce Fiss. He graduated from Kansas University in 1953, where he was a football and baseball varsity letterman and a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.Mr. Leawood served in the U.S. Air Force as a first lieutenant for two years. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns before he entered the service.Mr. Fiss played baseball for the Fargo Twins. He then played linebacker for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL for 11 years and served as a captain of the team for six years. He won the NFL World Championship in 1964 and was an NFL Pro Bowl member in 1963 and 1964.He formed and was president of G.R. Fiss Co., an insurance and surety bond agency now operated by his sons. He retired in 1999.Mr. Fiss was a member of the KU Athletic Corporation Board, a past president of the K-Club, past member and president of Milburn Golf and Country Club, past president of Kansas Investors, past president of the Plaza Optimists Club, a member of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral and a former YMCA youth football coach for 10 years.He married Nancy Lou Hampton. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Robert B. and wife Kimberly, Prairie Village, Kan., and Scott H. and wife Amy S., Leawood; a daughter, Leslie Fiss Young and husband Duane, Leawood; 10 grandchildren, Christopher, Abigail, Alexandra, Kelsie, Galen, Jacob, Caroline, Suzanne, Lauren and Bronwyn.The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Assn., Heart of America Chapter, 3846 W. 75th Street, Prairie Village 66208.
