T. Rawleigh Gaines 1922 - 2006 Belton
Warrensburg, Mo. - Services for T. Rawleigh Gaines, 83, Belton, will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg. Burial with military honors will be in Warrensburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery.Mr. Gaines died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Home in Belton.He was born Dec. 29, 1922, in Peculiar, the son of Lee and Ida May Hatch Gaines. He graduated from Peculiar High School in 1940. He attended Central Missouri State Teachers College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial arts education in 1946. He received a master's degree from Colorado State College in Greeley in 1950 and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Missouri in 1955.Mr. Gaines served in the U.S. Army Air Force with the Eighth Air Force from 1943 to 1945.He taught school in Eudora, Kan., for three years in the late 1940s. He then joined the faculty at Central Missouri State Teachers College. He was a visiting professor at the Institute of Education and Research in West Pakistan, with the U.S. Agency for International Development from 1962 to 1964. He served as chairman of the Division of Applied Arts and Science at Central Missouri State Teachers College in 1965. He was named dean of the newly established School of Applied Sciences and Technology in 1969 and served as dean until he retired in 1986. He served as a lecturer and consultant at the Institute of Education and Research in Pakistan in 1986.He married Dena Cheeseman on Sept. 30, 1943, in Belleville, Ill. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Thomas R. Jr., Blue Springs, and James R., Lee's Summit; a daughter, Alice Ann Oman, Grandview; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.The family suggests memorials to the CMSU Foundation, sent in care of the funeral home, 617 N. Maguire St. Warrensburg, MO 64093.
