Arthur L. Sloan 1950 - 2006
Services for Arthur L. "Art" Sloan, 55, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lawrence. Private burial will be in Norton Cemetery, Norton.Mr. Sloan died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at his home.He was born July 25, 1950, in Norton, the son of Arthur T. and Anna Boyd Sloan. He graduated from Norton High School in 1968. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972 from Kansas University, where he also had graduate hours in education.Mr. Sloan taught English and the humanities at Lawrence High School for 33 years and retired in May 2005. He received numerous teaching awards and taught 17 different courses in English and the humanities. He was an assistant pep club sponsor for 12 years and coached the Scholar's Bowl for 13 years. He was selected as the eighth recipient of the Allen Press Distinguished Teacher Award at Lawrence High School in May 1993. He was recognized by the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as a teacher who influenced his students' academic lives profoundly. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Lawrence chapter of Kansas National Education Assn. and the Lawrence Retired Teachers' Assn.Survivors include a brother, Howard, Hays; and two sisters, Iris Kluber, Paola, and Dorothy Holmes, Rochester, N.Y.The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until the service hour Saturday at the church.The family suggests memorials to the Art Sloan Scholarship Fund, which will be established with the Lawrence Schools Foundation, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
