Walter V. Slater Sr.

Graveside services for Walter V. Slater Sr., 84, Oskaloosa, will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Leavenworth National Cemetery.Mr. Slater died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at Hickory Pointe Care Center in Oskaloosa.He was born July 11, 1921, in Walla Walla, Wash., the son of Walter Lee and Mary Gladys Baird Slater.Mr. Slater served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as an over-the-road truck driver and retired in 1980. He was a former lieutenant for the Los Angeles Police Department. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 208.He married Charlotte Marie Rupnik in June 1942. She died earlier.A daughter, Kathy McNeely, also died earlier.Survivors include two sons, Walter V. Jr., Topeka, and William, Ozawkie; two daughters, Janice Nikodem, Cedar City, Utah, and Peggy Smith, Fontana, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa is in charge of arrangements.
