Erbest M. Cowles

Services for Ernest M. Cowles, 90, Topeka, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Northland Christian Church in Topeka. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.Mr. Cowles died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at his home.He was born Aug. 21, 1915, in Lawrence, the son of Fred and Ellen Leonard Cowles. He attended Lawrence High School.Mr. Cowles served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II with the 1831st Ordnance Company in the Pacific. He was a manager for Osawatomie Farmer Co-op from 1957 to 1963, when he transferred to Far-Mar-Co terminal grain elevator near Topeka. He retired in 1980 as manager of its truck grain department and office manager of its rail department.He served on the Plum Creek school board and was a project leader for Plum Creek 4-H Club, both in Paola. He also helped organize the rural water district in the Paola area.He married Alberta Hadl on Aug. 19, 1939, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Robert, Menlo Park, Calif.; a daughter, Ellen Dollar, Monett, Mo.; a sister, Ruth Cowles, Topeka; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.A grandson died Dec. 25, 1986.Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka.
