Jean Clark Murphy

Funeral services for Jean Clark Murphy, 81, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will be in the Eudora Cemetery.She died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Elk City, the daughter of Tony and Harriett Phillips Clark. She graduated from high school in Galena and enrolled as a pre-med student at Kansas University. She had lived in Douglas County since 1946.In her career, she established both Murphy Interiors in 1947 and Murphy Real Estate during her time as a real estate broker. She was also one of the first female commercial pilots in Kansas, flying state and national politicians on Kansas campaign stops.She was former president of the Lawrence Flying Club, and a member of the 99s, the International Organization of Women Pilots. She also was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Eagles.Survivors include three sons, Jack, Baldwin, Patrick, Haymarket, Va., and Michael, Lawrence; a daughter, Jennifer, New Market, Md.; a brother, Adrian Clark, Tucson, Ariz., 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.One grandchild died earlier.The family will greet friends from 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Emergency Medical Technicians, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent to info@warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Murphy.
