Lawrence T. Turner 1919 - 2006
Funeral services for Lawrence "Piggy" T. Turner, 86, Lawrence, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Second Christian Church in Lawrence. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Members of American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 will conduct military graveside services.Mr. Turner died Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born April 4, 1919, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Samuel A. and Lillian Dyer Turner. He lived in Lawrence since 1925.Mr. Turner served in the U.S. Army as a Buffalo Soldier with the 10th Cavalry unit during World War II. He worked as a baker at Drake's Bakery and also as a personal assistant and housekeeper at the Kansas University chancellor's residence for former chancellors W. Clarke Wescoe and Laurence Chalmers. He was a member of the Second Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge in Lawrence.He married Cynthia J. Gaines on May 4, 1945, in Lawrence. She survives.Other survivors include a son, Lawrence "Mike," Seattle; a daughter, Gwendolyn Turner, Seattle; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.Friends may call from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.The family suggests memorials to a charity of the donor's choice, sent in care of the mortuary.E-mail condolences may be sent to <a href="mailto:info@warrenmcelwain.com">info@warrenmcelwain.com</a>, subject: Turner.
