Dorothy “Annis” Stewart

Services for Dorothy “Annis” Stewart, 87, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Centenary United Methodist Church.She bequeathed her body to the Kansas University School of Medicine.Mrs. Stewart died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.She was born June 13, 1919, in Nottinghill, Mo., the daughter of Lucas C. and Myrtle A. Ball Trent. She grew up in Hutchinson and graduated from Hutchinson High School.Before moving to Lawrence with her family, Mrs. Stewart served on the Hutchinson Recreation Commission. She was a Girl Scout leader in Hutchinson and Lawrence. In Lawrence, she and her husband were foster care providers for 10 years, and she worked for Duckwall’s in Lawrence from 1957 until it closed.Mrs. Stewart was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and a former member of Hadley Memorial Methodist Church in Hutchinson. She served as a choir director, Sunday school teacher and youth group sponsor at both churches, and she and her husband presented music programs to many senior citizen groups in Lawrence. She was a former member of the Clover Hill Extension Homemakers Unit and the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union.She married Robert L. “Bob” Stewart on Aug. 30, 1937, in Hutchinson. He survives, of the home.Other survivors include a daughter, Janice LeeAnn Houk, Lawrence; a son, Gerald Stewart, Blue Springs, Mo.; a brother, Arvin Trent, Salina; a sister, Alena Mettlen, Leavenworth; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.The family suggests memorials to Centenary United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Stewart.
