Shirlie Ann Vaughn

Services for Shirlie Ann Vaughn, 75, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Christ Community Church. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.Ms. Vaughn died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.She was born April 30, 1931, in Liberty, Mo., the daughter of Carl and Mildred Landes Gibson. After her father’s death she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Clyde Hill.She was a 1948 graduate of Yates Center High School and attended Washburn University in Topeka.Ms. Vaughn served as a fraternity mother at Kansas University for 30 years, most recently at Delta Upsilon fraternity. She was a radio host for KLWN radio for many years and hosted a cooking show, “As the Potato Peels.”She was a member and past board member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and P.E.O and a board member for KTWU-TV in Topeka. She was a Republican precinct committeewoman in Lawrence and served as campaign chairwoman for Larry Winn and Bob Dole. She was a longtime volunteer in Lawrence and served as an instructor to the blind in Kansas City.She was married to “Arkie” Vaughn for 32 years. They divorced.Survivors include a son, David Vaughn and wife Laura, Lawrence; two daughters, Sandie Hilt and husband Steve, and Tammie Capps and husband Greg, all of Lawrence; and 10 grandchildren, Heather and Spencer Hilt; Meghan Dervin; Blair, Grant, Kyle and Keith Capps; Madison and Hannah Vaughn, and Hayden Steiner.She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Christian Hilt and Hayle Vaughn.Friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.The family suggests memorials to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, sent in care of the chapel.
