Virgil Ross Foster

Services for Virgil Ross Foster, 82, Eudora, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Eudora Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow in Eudora City Cemetery.Mr. Foster died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born Jan. 17, 1924, in Golden City, Mo., the son of John William and Romola Caroline Leivan Foster. He graduated from Golden City High School in 1942 and attended Missouri University.Mr. Foster served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 during World War II in the Canon Company, 14th Infantry, and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He worked as a heavy equipment operator at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in De Soto for 38 years and retired in 1989. He then worked for Coast to Coast Hardware in Eudora and Arrowhead Hardware in Baldwin. He was a member of Eudora Assembly of God Church, where he served as a deacon for 46 years. He was also a member of the Operating Engineers Local 6 in Kansas City, Mo., for 30 years. He was also a scoutmaster.He married M. Maxine Phillips on Oct. 6, 1948, in Miami, Okla. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Philip, Kimberling City, Mo., and Larry, Assaria; two daughters, Caroline Hicks, Shawnee, and Glenda Caldwell, Lawrence; a brother, Jack, Lamar, Mo.; 20 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.A daughter, Sonia Marie Foster, died Aug. 4, 1989.Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.The family suggests memorials to the church, sent in care of the funeral home.Online condolences may be sent at www.rumsey-yost.com.
