Graveside services for Gretchen Guernsey Leigh, 91, La Crosse, Wis., will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence.Dr. Leigh died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home in La Crosse, Wis.She was born Nov. 17, 1914, in Ames, Iowa, the daughter of Seymour and Leeta Southwick Guernsey. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pittsburg State College in 1934 and a medical degree from Kansas University Medical School in 1938. She completed her internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, from 1938 to 1939 and residency in anesthesiology in Evansville, Ind., in 1942.Dr. Leigh worked as a coroner in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., from 1942 to 1945, an assistant professor of anesthesiology at KU Medical School from 1946 to 1955, an anesthesiologist at Providence Hospital from 1956 to 1961 and was head of anesthesiology at Gunderson Clinic in La Crosse, Wis., from 1961 to 1979.She married Harold Roscoe Leigh on March 1, 1942, in Evansville, Ind. He died June 6, 1960.Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Leigh Yeager and Julia Pearl Leigh Fields.The family suggests memorials to St. Claire Health Mission, 916 Ferry St., La Crosse, WI 54601.
