Charlene Elm Pohl 1922 - 2006 Worden
Services for Charlene Elm Pohl, 84, Worden, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Old Worden United Methodist Church in Worden. Burial will follow in Worden Cemetery.Mrs. Pohl died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.She was born Feb. 4, 1922, in rural Douglas County, the daughter of Charley and Gladys M. Flora Elm. She grew up in the Worden community and attended Range Line Elementary School. She attended Appanoose High School and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1939, where she was salutatorian of her class. She also attended Ottawa University.Mrs. Pohl was a farmer's wife and homemaker. She worked as a clerk at the Baldwin Post Office for 21 years and retired in 1988. She was a lifelong member of Worden United Methodist Church, where she served on various committees. She was also a member of the Douglas County Extension Council and executive board for many years. She served on the council of the 4-H Fair Advisory and Worden Workers 4-H Club. She was an auxiliary volunteer at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 15 years. She and her husband enjoyed traveling. She also enjoyed gardening, planting flowers and spending time with her family, friends, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.She married Orvil L. Pohl on Feb. 6, 1941, at her parent's home near Worden. They shared more than 55 years of marriage. He died March 20, 1996.Her parents died earlier, and two great-grandsons, Reuben Hawkins and Noah Miller, died earlier.Survivors include a son, Wendell Pohl and wife Marsha, Baldwin; a daughter, Renita Ubel and husband Raymond, Ottawa; three granddaughters, Sarah Ubel, Ruth Hawkins and Hannah Boyd; and three great-grandchildren, Levi and Issac Hawkins and Anna Miller.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at New Worden Methodist Church.The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn. or Heifer Project International, sent in care of Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, P.O.
