John M. Nugent

Mass of Christian burial for John M. Nugent, 82, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Military graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olivet Cemetery in St. Joseph, Mo.Mr. Nugent died Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born Sept. 6, 1923, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Michael John and Helen G. Cooper Nugent. Mr. Nugent was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. He served with Gen. George Patton in the 12th Armored Division and received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He graduated from Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Mo., in 1949 and received a graduate degree in library science from Emporia State University in 1950. Mr. Nugent was a librarian at Kansas University from 1950 until his retirement in 1993. He worked at Watson Library and the Spencer Research Library. He was designated as KU’s first university archivist in 1969.He was a member of the 12th Armored Division Group, Disabled American Veterans and National Library Assn.He married Mary A. Evans on Jan. 18, 1949, in St. Joseph. She died Nov. 29, 2001.Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Hutchison, Rosedale, Ind.; Mary C. Creps, Cleveland; two sisters, Mary H. Lewis, Kansas City, Mo., and Helen Ozier, Parsons; and three grandchildren.The family will meet with friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
