James “Smokey” H. Barnett

Services for James H. “Smokey” Barnett, 79, Warrensburg, Mo., will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lawrence Funeral Chapel. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth.Mr. Barnett died Thursday, April 6, 2006, in Kansas City, Mo.He was born Jan. 2, 1927, in Olathe, the son of Edward and Lucy Barnett. He graduated from Linwood High School in 1944.Mr. Barnett served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II. He worked as a conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad for 29 years. He had lived in Lawrence and Linwood.He was a member of the Church of Hope in Centerview, Mo., and Masonic Lodge No. 354 in Bremond, Texas.He married Bonnie Ruth Barrett on Sept. 15, 1946, in Linwood. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include four sons, Ora “Ed,” Snohomish, Wash., Gerald W., Bonner Springs, Thomas J., Sioux City, Iowa, and Joel S., Lawrence; three daughters, LaRinda Sue McConnaughey, Linwood, Patty Lynn Elmer, Eudora, and Toni Lea Erickson, Lone Jack, Mo.; a sister, Elsie J. Snyder, Edwardsville; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.A grandson and a great-granddaughter died earlier.The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.The family suggests memorials to the Church of Hope Building Fund, sent in care of the funeral chapel.
