Verna Virginia Smith

Graveside services for Verna Virginia Smith, 85, Lecompton, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Lecompton.Mrs. Smith died Friday, March 31, 2006, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence.She was born July 6, 1920, the daughter of Herman and Ada Alexander Kahle. She attended school in Alta Vista and lived in Lecompton since 1964.Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and also owned Verna’s Cafe in Lecompton and worked as a baker at Kansas University’s Lewis Hall and as a cook at Lecompton Elementary School. She was a member of the Lecompton Methodist Church, the Sunshine Club and Rebekahs Friendship Lodge, all in Lecompton.She married Edward Farnsworth in 1938. They divorced. She married Gerald Leo Smith on June 17, 1951, in Mount Hope. He died Oct. 10, 1998.Survivors include a son, Dale Smith, Lawrence; two daughters, Janice Hefling, Mount Hope, and VeNora Dark, Lecompton; a step-daughter, Sharon Bufford, Wilsey; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.The family suggests memorials to the Lecompton United Methodist Church or to the Lecompton Historical Society, sent in care of the mortuary.
