Katharine B. Kelley

Services for Katharine B. Kelley, 96, Baldwin, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Baldwin. Burial will follow in Vinland Cemetery.Miss Kelley died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born June 2, 1909, near Vinland, the daughter of George Edwards and Kate Sophia Soule Kelley. She grew up in Vinland and graduated from Vinland High School in 1928. She graduated from Baker University with a bachelor’s degree in 1932. She also attended Kansas University and received an honorary doctoral degree from Baker.Miss Kelley was a teacher from 1932 to 1974. She served the districts of Clearfield and Hopewell for six years and taught fifth grade at Baldwin Elementary School from 1939 until she retired in 1974. She continued working at Baldwin City Library. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Baldwin and was circle president of First United Methodist Women’s Group in Baldwin. She was active in the Baldwin Bird Club, Kansas Ornitholgical Society, North American Bird Banding Assn., Oregon-California Trail Assn., and a charter member of the Santa Fe Trail Assn. She volunteered at Baldwin Senior Center, Santa Fe Trail Historical Society, the Maple Leaf Festival and many other organizations. She received the Dr. Ivan L. Boyd Award for Outstanding Contributions and Service from the Kansas Ornithological Society in 2004. She was named Teacher of the Century at the Baldwin High School Alumni Banquet and was the first recipient of the Missouri River Outfitters of the Santa Fe Trails newly established Outstanding Achievement Award in 2005.Survivors include a sister, Martha Cutter Kelley Smith, Baldwin.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Baldwin.The family suggests memorials to the Baldwin City Library or the Katharine B.
