Esther E. Brekke 1917 - 2005
Services for Esther E. Brekke, 88, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ellsworth Funeral Home, Madison, S.D. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Madison.Mrs. Brekke died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence.She was born July 30, 1917, in Helena, Mont., the daughter of Samuel F. and Rebecca Kent Schmidt. She graduated from Ramona High School in 1936 and attended the Omaha Academy of Cosmetology in 1937. She moved to Perry in 2000 before moving to Lawrence.Mrs. Brekke farmed west of Madison until 1947, when she and her husband opened the Coffee Bar in downtown Madison. She worked at the Casey Drug Store in Madison for more than 35 years. She retired from Dakota Drug and Jewelry and later worked in the church office at LOVE Ministries in North Platte, Neb. She was active in the United Methodist church, where she taught Sunday school for 30 years. She was a member of the Isaac Walton League, a lifetime member of Lake County Homemakers Extension Club, served as president of the P.T.A. at Garfield Grade School and was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was active in the Democratic Party and ran for county treasurer. She was honored as Religious Volunteer of the Year at LOVE Ministries.She married Harvey R. Brekke in 1938. He died in 1970.Survivors include three daughters, Rebecca DeLong, Pittsfield, Ill., Delcena Lease, North Platte, Neb., and Delonn Anderson, Perry; a brother, Calvin Schmidt, Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.Friends may call from noon to 7 p.m. Friday at Ellsworth Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends for a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.ellsworthfh.com">www.ellsworthfh.com</a>.
