Marian Derby Hawks 1922 - 2005
Services for Marian "Joan" Derby Hawks, 83, Berryton, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Lawrence. Burial with military honors will be in Topeka Cemetery.Mrs. Hawks died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at her home, following a long illness. She was born Aug. 9, 1922, in the Oakland community of Topeka, the daughter of Roy and Margaret Derby. She grew up and attended schools in Topeka. She moved to Chicago and attended Hyde Park and graduated from Hirsh High School. She attended Bryant and Stratton College and Vogue School of Design in Chicago.Mrs. Hawks served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was one of the first W.A.V.E.S. to be inducted into military service at the Great Lakes Naval Station. She was a homemaker and worked in insurance services at the Kansas Inspection Bureau for 25 years before she retired. She was a member of the Episcopal Church, where she served in a variety of capacities.She married F. Warren Hawks on Feb. 14, 1950. He died in 1993.Survivors include a son, John W. Hawks, Kent, Ohio; a daughter, Ann M. Hawks, Berryton; and three grandsons.The family suggests memorials to the Melissa A. Hanger Apartment Project, sent in care of Topeka Community Foundations, 5431 S.W. 29th St., Suite 300, Topeka 66614.Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence is in charge of arrangements.
