Howard Wayne Miller 1926 - 2005 Lawrence

Private services for Howard Wayne Miller, 79, Lawrence, will be at a later date.Mr. Miller died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born July 28, 1926, in Eaton, Colo., the son of Howard Ellis and Hazel McCarty Miller. He graduated from Eaton High School and earned a degree in petroleum refining and chemical engineering, receiving a silver diploma from the Colorado School of Mines in 1950. He received a new silver diploma in 2000 for 50 years of service at the school, where he played varsity football and was president of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He retired to Houston and moved to Lawrence in 1997.He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, as a fire control officer on the USS Cotton 669.Mr. Miller worked for the Great Western Sugar Co. He then worked in research and development at Phillips Petroleum Co., where he later worked in management.He participated in many city chambers, JCS, church activities and high school booster clubs. He married Joan Marie Boyd on Sept. 28, 1950. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a daughter, Gayleen Miller Hove, Lawrence; and a granddaughter.The family suggests memorials to the National Alzheimer's Assn. or the National Cancer Society, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence.Condolences may be sent to Joan B.
