Howard A. Stoltenberg 1912 - 2005 Lawrence
Services for Howard A. Stoltenberg, 93, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Inurnment will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Ellsworth Cemetery.Mr. Stoltenberg died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.He was born Jan. 12, 1912, in Holyrood, the son of Gustave and Hanna Ohlemeier Stoltenberg. He graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1935 and received a Master of Science in chemistry from Kansas University in 1938.Mr. Stoltenberg was chief chemist in the environmental laboratory at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. He retired in 1975. He was formerly an assistant professor of civil engineering at KU from 1946 to 1970. He was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma professional fraternity. He was also a member of the American Water Works Assn., Kansas Public Health Assn., Kansas Water Pollution Control Assn., and Plymouth Congregational Church.He married Clara Jilka in 1938. She died in 1986. He married Alwilna Thiry Burris in 1989, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, David H., Downers Grove, Ill., and Gerald A., Topeka; two daughters, Ellen Thompson, Wichita, and Elaine Balazs, Garden City; a stepson, Bruce Burris, Irvine, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Shirley Henson, Livermore, Calif.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.The family suggests memorials to the church, the Lawrence Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Fund or Hospice Care in Douglas County, sent in care of the mortuary.E-mail condolences may be sent to <a href="mailto:info@warrenmcelwain.com">info@warrenmcelwain.com</a>, subject: Stoltenberg.
