James Edward Porter 1942 - 2005 Lawrence
Services for James Edward Porter, 62, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence. Burial will be in Wellsville Cemetery.Mr. Porter died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, at his home.He was born Nov. 26, 1942, in Wellsville, the son of Floyd Gerald and Naomi Rose Caruthers Porter. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1960.Mr. Porter served in the U.S. Navy for six years and received the National Defense Service Medal and two Good Conduct Awards. He worked at Campus Hideaway Pizza Parlor in high school. After the service, he worked at Ship Winter Chevrolet and for Dale Willey, and attended GM Parts Manager School. He also worked at James Gang Auto Parts, Hillcrest Bowl and at the Wolf Creek nuclear plant as a security guard during its construction. He worked for the Kansas University Athletic Department from 1987 until he retired on June 1, 2005. He was a member of Lawrence Men's Bowling Assn., where he served as director for 20 years.He married Georgia "Jeannie" Bell on July 27, 1975, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Scott Bain, Lawrence; two daughters, CherÃ- Bain and Crystal Porter, both of Lawrence; two brothers, Robert and Billy D., both of Lawrence; a sister, Wanda Vickery, Lawrence; and two grandchildren.Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Youth Bowling or the American Cancer Society, sent in care of the funeral home.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.rumsey-yost.com">www.rumsey-yost.com</a>.
