Jay Simon 1917 - 2005 Green Valley, Ariz.
Services for Jay Simon, 88, Green Valley, are pending and will be announced by the family.Mr. Simon died Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, in Green Valley.He was born Jan. 1, 1917, in Webb City, Mo., the son of John and Frances Roberts Simon. He was raised in Galena, Kan., and received a journalism degree from Kansas University in Lawrence, Kan.Mr. Simon served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a weather observer and instructor of recruits in that field. He received a Bronze Star while serving in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan.He was a sports writer and editor. He worked as the sports information director at Kansas University for 12 years. He also worked for the Daily Oklahoman and the Topeka State Journal and Coffeyville Journal in Kansas. He retired as managing editor for Golf Digest quarterly. After his retirement, he continued to write critique and resort pieces for Golf Digest, as well as a sports column for the Green Valley News & Sun and Safford newspaper until 1995.He married Sylvia Mickler. She died in 1991.Survivors include his companion Kaye Wivell, Green Valley; three sons, Jay and John, both of Tucson, and Richard, Palm Desert, Calif.; a brother, Richard, Colorado; a sister, Betty Murdock, California; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
