Beulah Opal Hamlet Higgins 1917 - 2005
Graveside services for Beulah Opal Hamlet Higgins, 88, Alamogordo, N.M., will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence.Mrs. Higgins died Friday, Oct. 14, 2005.She was born Jan. 20, 1917, in Horton, the daughter of William Henry and Pearl Ethel Cress Hamlet.She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1935.Mrs. Higgins worked at the Brown Shoe Co. in Pittsfield, Ill., from 1948 until she retired when the factory closed in 1977. She also helped her husband in commercial fishing on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.She was a member of the Christian Church and the Little Blue Club in Detroit, Ill. She also was a member of the international club of Jolly Seventeeners. After moving to Alamogordo in 1989, Mrs. Higgins became a member of the White Sands Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as chairwoman for Veterans Services from 1991 to 2005. She also was a member of the Alamogordo Genealogical Society.She married Frederick "Fred" Higgins on Oct. 21, 1936, in Ottawa. He died on Sept. 30, 1985. Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Higgins Gilliam, Cloudcroft, N.M.; a son, Kenneth Higgins, Volga, S.D.; six brothers, Glenn Hamlet, Greeley, Colo., Duain Hamlet, Gill, Colo., Wallace Hamlet, Central Point, Ore., Donald Hamlet, Lecompton, Walter Hamlet, Cotopaxi, Colo. and Paul Hamlet, Woodland Park, Colo.; a sister, Lenora Hamlet Davison, Holdenville, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
