Clifford L. Syverson

Services for Dr. Clifford L. Syverson, 85, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills, Iowa. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills.Mr. Syverson died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at his home in Lawrence.He was born Feb. 23, 1920, in Driscoll, N.D., the son of John M. and Minnie T. Berkvam Syverson. He graduated from Scarville Public School in Scarville, Iowa, in 1938, and from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1945 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree. He moved to Lawrence in 1978.Mr. Syverson served as a captain in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps during the Korean War. He started a veterinarian practice of in Lake Mills in 1945, where he practiced for 33 years. He served on the Lake Mills City Council for eight years and was elected to serve as mayor from 1964 to 1970. He worked as a relief veterinarian in the Lawrence area and retired in 1988. He was an active volunteer for Friends of the Lawrence Public Library, where he served as treasurer of the board of directors for 14 years.He married Dorothy M. Hankner on Aug. 11, 1944, in Nashua, Iowa. She died Aug. 18, 2001.Survivors include two sons, Mark C., Columbia, S.C., and Dean R., Lawrence.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Salvation Army, sent in care of the mortuary.E-mail condolences may be sent to info@warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Syverson.
