Dick A. Wise 1919 - 2005
Visitation services for Dick A. Wise, 86, Lawrence, will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be later.Mr. Wise died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence.He was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Lawrence, the son of Charles and Ruby McLean Wise. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence in 1937, where he was a Future Farmers of America Star Farmer. He later attended business college and graduated from Kansas University. He was a lifelong resident of Grant Township.Mr. Wise was a farmer and stockman in Douglas County for more than 60 years. He was recognized by the Kansas Bankers Assn. in 1967 for his soil conservation practices, by the Grassland Management Assn. for being a leader in land stewardship, and by the Farmer's Honor Acre at the National Agricultural Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs. He cooperated with Michael Landon's production of "Where Pigeons go to Die" and had several scenes filmed on his farm in 1990. He was a longtime member of the Oak Ridge School Board and the Farmer's Co-op.He married Bertha L. Milleret on May 3, 1942, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Dick Jr., Lawrence, and Dale, Hill Air Force Base, Utah; two daughters, Peggy Miller, Oskaloosa, and Donna Begshaw, Lenexa; a sister, Kathryn Heck, Overland Park; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.The family suggests memorials to Heart of America Hospice, sent in care of the funeral home.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.rumsey-yost.com">www.rumsey-yost.com</a>.
