John D. Roth 1925 - 2005 Ottawa
Graveside inurnment services with military honors for John D. Roth, 80, Ottawa, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Cemetery in Ottawa.Mr. Roth died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, at his home.He was born Aug. 11, 1925, in York, Neb., the son of John L. and Mollie Meisner Roth. He lived in Ottawa since 1952.Mr. Roth served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman first class from 1942 to 1946 during World War II and again from 1948 to 1950. He served four years on the U.S.S. Colorado as a gunner's mate and received commendations and citations, including a Purple Heart. He worked as a security officer for Sunflower Ammunition Plant in De Soto for 35 years and retired Dec. 31, 1986. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.Mr. Roth was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 5901, where he served four years as trustee and three years on the House Committee. He also was a member of American Legion Warren Black Post 60, where he served as vice commander and commander. He was a life member of the U.S.S. Colorado Alumni.He married Dorothy "Jeanne" Baldwin on July 7, 1949, in Baldwin. She died May 21, 2003.A son, Roy, also died earlier.Survivors include two sons, J.D. Jr. and Ricky L., both of Ottawa; a daughter, Colleen Adams, Ottawa; a brother, Gordon, Glendora, Calif.; a sister, Genevieve Fredrick, Chatsworth, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa.The family suggests memorials to Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 5901 or Midland Hospice, sent in care of the mortuary, 235 S.
