Arthur John “Smitty” Schmidt Sr.

Graveside services for Arthur John “Smitty” Schmidt Sr., 72, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Schmidt died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at his home.He was born Dec. 4, 1932, in Bismarck, N.D., the son of Martin and Ellen Connolly Schmidt. He was a longtime resident of Lawrence.Mr. Schmidt served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. He was a master plumber. He owned and operated Smitty’s Plumbing for 12 years. He formerly worked for Brown’s Plumbing for five years and Norris Brothers Plumbing for 16 years. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post 852, where he was commander from 1979 to 1980. He was also a member of Mount Oread Aerie 309, Eagles, in Lawrence, Local 743 Union and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.He married Angela Mae Rowe on July 21, 1951, in Loup City, Neb. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Thomas, Topeka, and Arthur J. Jr., Lawrence; a daughter, Kathleen Squires, Lawrence; two brothers, Richard, Panama, Iowa, and George, Wichita; four sisters, Mary Jo Rich, Leavenworth, Annette Brehm, Columbus, Neb., Ellen Schmidt, Panama, Iowa, and Theresa Gauna, Lawrence; and four grandchildren.Two infant sons died earlier.A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.E-mail condolences may be sent to info@warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Schmidt.
