Dorothy N. Resch Knox

Memorial services for Dorothy N. Resch Knox, 89, Lawrence, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Smith Center at Brandon Woods Retirement Community. Private burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.Mrs. Knox died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.She was born March 31, 1916, in Emporia, the daughter of David W. and Alice Fisher Resch. She moved to Lawrence in 1962 from Olathe.Mrs. Knox received a bachelor’s degree in education from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. She taught at Bethany College, Burlington High School, Wellington High School and in Baldwin, Eureka, Olathe and Lawrence during her career.She helped organize Hestia Club in Baldwin and was its first president. She was a member of Chapter FZ of the PEO Sisterhood, Pi Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma, the Lawrence Schools Foundation and the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She also helped organize the first “free” kindergarten. Prior to that, families had to pay for children to attend kindergarten.Mrs. Knox was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence.She married Carl S. Knox on May 10, 1942, in Emporia. He later became superintendent of Lawrence schools. He died Aug. 29, 1990.Survivors include two daughters, Carladyne Conyers, Lawrence, and Nancy J. Todd, Aurora, Colo.; and four grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. At that time and at the memorial service, a portion of Mrs. Knox’s doll collection will be available for purchase for a $50 donation.
