Verrell L. Dethloff Sr.

Funeral services for Verrell L. Dethloff Sr., 85, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Kansas City, Mo.Mr. Dethloff died Friday, May 6, 2005, at his home in Lawrence.He was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Bridgeport, Texas, the son of Lewis “Jack” and Ula Leona Story Dethloff.Mr. Dethloff served with the U.S. Army in Algeria, Tunisia and Italy during World War II. A staff sergeant, he was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the American Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the European-African Middle East Campaign Medal with three bronze stars.He worked for Gustin-Bacon and Certain-Teed in Kansas City, Mo., and retired from Aeroquip in Lawrence after 37 years of service.Mr. Dethloff married Janie W. Arwine on Feb. 4, 1945, in Fort Worth, Texas. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include three sons, Tracy, Lawrence, Verrell Jr., Bothell, Wash., and Lloyd, Ann Arbor, Mich.; two daughters, Stephanie Taylor, Independence, Mo., and Gaythal Boyd, Crane, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.The family suggests memorials to Hospice Care in Douglas County or the American Cancer Society, sent in care of the funeral home.
