Eleanor “Polly” Payton

Services for Eleanor “Polly” Payton, 80, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence. Burial with military honors will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Leavenworth National Cemetery.Mrs. Payton died Thursday, June 23, 2005, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.She was born Nov. 1, 1924, in New York City, the daughter of Oscar G. and Florence L. Shackleton Peterson. She graduated from Montclair, N.J., High School in 1942. She was a resident of Overland Park for many years before she moved to the Lake of the Ozarks in 1982. She moved to Lawrence in 1990.Mrs. Payton served in the Women Marine Reserves from 1945 to 1946. She participated in the dedication of the Dole Institute at Kansas University. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a lifetime member of Lake Ozark Hospital Auxiliary, Women Marines Assn., and a charter member of the Women in Military Service Memorial Foundation. She married Lee R. Payton in 1946 in Salt Lake City. He died Oct. 11, 1996.Survivors include a son, Kenneth B. Payton, Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Leslie A. Cowart, Baldwin; a brother, Robert S.
