William J. Arthur 1919 - 2005

Services for William J. Arthur, 85, Overland Park, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.Mr. Arthur died Sunday, July 24, 2005, in Olathe.He was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Charles Shirk Sr. and Anna Hope Pearson Arthur. He graduated from St. John High School in Olathe and received a Bachelor's of Science in business from Kansas University, where he played football and basketball. He was a former resident of Lawrence.Mr. Arthur served in the U.S. Navy and attained the rank of Lieutenant J.G. He and his brothers were featured in Life Magazine for their service in World War II. He was a residential home builder in the greater Kansas City area for more than 30 years and later sold real estate in the Kansas City area. He attended the Methodist Church. He was a member of the National Association of Home Builders and Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.He married Shirley Nadine Bayles on April 2, 1944. She died Aug. 12, 2004.Survivors include two sons, Vance, Overland Park, and Joseph B., Santa Barbara, Calif.; three brothers, Charles S. Jr., Manhattan, Wade H., Shawnee, and James T., Wichita; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday before the services.The family suggests memorials to Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity in Lawrence or the American Heart Assn., sent in care of the funeral home.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.rumsey-yost.com">www.rumsey-yost.com</a>.
