Hobart L. Betz

Services for Hobart L. Betz, 81, Rantoul, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. Burial will be in Lane Cemetery, Lane.Mr. Betz died Friday, July 22, 2005, at Life Care Center of Osawatomie.He was born Dec. 3, 1923, in Osawatomie, the son of Frank Horn and Florence Estelle Needham Betz.Mr. Betz served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War in the 1648th Engineering Utilities Detail. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, European Theater Medal and the Bronze Star.He was a 58-year member of the Lane Masonic Lodge 339, A.F. & A.M., and a 23-year member of Ottawa Lodge 803, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He also served on the board for Rural Water District No. 6, the Rantoul Community Center Board and the Central Heights Unified School District 288 school board.He married Esther June Hicks on Feb. 21, 1948, in Rantoul. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Michael Lynn, Topeka, and Stephen Hobart, Lawrence; two daughters, Sandra Benton, Paola, and Katherine Williams, Rantoul; a sister, Faith James, Lane; a brother, Bart, Deming, N.M.; 11 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; seven great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.The family suggests memorials to Central Heights Scholarship Fund or Ruhamah Baptist Church Building Fund, sent in care of the mortuary, 235 S.
