Helena Anna Stahl

Mass of Christian Burial for Helena Anna Stahl, 89, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Teresa’s Catholic Cemetery in Westphalia.Ms. Stahl died Monday, July 18, 2005, at Pioneer Ridge Nursing Home in Lawrence. She was born Jan. 15, 1916, in Westphalia, the daughter of Joseph F. and Elizabeth Brands Stahl. She had lived in Lawrence since 1944. She attended school in Westphalia and graduated from the School of Cosmetology in Topeka in 1936, where she spent several years as a hair stylist.Ms. Stahl began her nursing career in 1941 and worked at hospitals in Holdrege, Neb., and Del Norte, Colo. She worked as an LPN at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 38 years and retired in 1982. She volunteered with the R.E.A.C.H. program, LINK and as a receptionist at Catholic Social Services. She also was active in OURS-Oldsters United for Responsible Services. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the Altar Society and was a charter member of Daughters of Isabella.Survivors include a brother, Frank R. Stahl, Westphalia.A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, where friends may call until 8 p.m. Wednesday.
