Sam Adame 1918 - 2005
Mass of Christian Burial for Sam Adame, 87, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Lawrence.Mr. Adame died Monday, July 11, 2005, at his home.He was born March 9, 1918, in Rock Creek, the son of Sebastian and Natividad Contreras Adame. He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia in 1948 with a double major in biology and Spanish. He graduated from the Kansas University School of Pharmacy in 1950.Mr. Adame served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. He opened the hospital pharmacy at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in 1960, the hospital pharmacy at Cushing Hospital in Leavenworth in 1965 and the Jefferson County Hospital Pharmacy in Winchester in 1971. He was a pharmacy consultant of the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth and retired in 1984. He also served two years in the Civilian Conservation Corps.He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Douglas County Mental Health Assn., a charter member of the Lawrence Toastmasters Club, a member of the Kansas State Horseshoe Pitchers Assn., National Horseshoe Pitchers Assn., Lawrence Lions Club, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Lawrence Human Relations Commission and a former member of the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Adame participated in three and won his division in two World Horseshoe Tournaments. He was in the Kansas State Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame. He also was a Melvin Jones Fellow of the Lawrence Lions Club, and received the Pioneer Award at Bert Nash Mental Health Center. He married Cora Ramirez on June 10, 1942, in Emporia. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include three daughters, Rita Adame and Sara Adame-Reese, both of Lawrence, and Laura Trickey, Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Robert, Topeka; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until a rosary prayer service at 7 p.m. today, and from the end of the to rosary service to 9 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.The family suggests memorials to the Sam Adame Horseshoe Pitching Memorial Fund, sent in care of the mortuary.
