Oletha L. Yates Blevins 1912 - 2005

Services for Oletha L. Yates Blevins, 93, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Private inurnment will be in Miriam Cemetery in Bethany, Mo.Mrs. Blevins died Monday, July 11, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born Feb. 25, 1912, in Bethany, Mo., the daughter of Charles M. and Stella A. Estep Nelson. She graduated from Bethany High School and Iowa State University with a teaching degree. She also had lived in Charleston, W.Va., where she continued her education in advanced courses. She moved to Lawrence in 1951.Mrs. Blevins was a junior high school and high school home economics teacher. She retired from teaching after 20 years. She was a home economics extension agent for Kansas State Extension Service-Douglas County from 1959 to 1978. She was a Girl Scout Leader, Sunday school teacher and community volunteer. She was a founding member of Meals on Wheels in Lawrence. She was actively involved in the 4-H program and continued to judge at the Douglas County Free Fair after she retired. Mrs. Blevins was an active member of First Christian Church in Lawrence and a charter member of First Christian Church in Charleston. She also was a member of the Douglas County Home Economics Assn., University Club, P.E.O. Chapter FZ, Daughters of the American Revolution, First Christian Church Women's Fellowship, Lawrence Humane Society, Penn House, Master Gardeners Club, National Extension Home Economists and the Kansas Extension Home Economics Assn.She married William E. Yates on June 22, 1935. He died in 1958. She married Les Blevins in 1962. He died in September 2002.Survivors include two sisters, Mary Margaret Bartlett, St. Joseph, Mo., and Elaine Baker, Lake Ridge, Va.; two stepsons, Gary Blevins and Les Blevins Jr., both of Lawrence; and a stepdaughter, Barbara Blevins, Lawrence.The family suggests memorials to First Christian Church in Lawrence or the Kansas 4-H Foundation-Oletha Blevins Scholarship, sent in care of the mortuary.E-mail condolences may be sent to <a href="mailto:info@warrenmcelwain.com">info@warrenmcelwain.com</a>, subject: Blevins.
