Deanna Kay Abel

Mass of Christian Burial for Deanna Kay Abel, 53, Emporia, will be at 5 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery in Eudora.Mrs. Abel died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe.She was born Aug. 15, 1952, in Ottawa, the daughter of Cecil and Marian Jewell Phillips Spratt.Mrs. Abel worked as an IMC director for Ottawa public schools from 1976 to 1979 and for East Central Kansas Cooperative in Education from 1980 to 1986. She taught school in Olathe from 1968 to 1993, taught preschool at Walnut Grade School from 1993 to 2002 and at Riverside Grade School, both in Emporia, from 2002 to present. She was a member of the International Reading Assn., Kansas Reading Assn., Phi Delta Kappa, Council for Exceptional Children, Legion of Mary and Zoo Docents.She married George R. Abel on Dec. 17, 1971, in Ottawa. He survives, of the home.Other survivors include her parents, Ottawa; two sons, Robert M. Abel, Burlington, and Benjamin C. Abel, Kansas City, Kan.; a brother, Dennis P. Spratt, Ottawa; and a sister, Kathy J. Domnanish, Ottawa.A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church.The family suggests memorials to Emporia Friends of the Zoo, sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, 605 State St., Emporia 66801.
