Services for James Bennett Hoffman Sr., 87, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.Mr. Hoffman died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.He was born Dec. 17, 1918, in Hannibal, Mo., the son of Ray Eugene and Kathryn Louise Eichenberger Hoffman. He attended Iowa State University and later received a degree in social work from the University of Missouri.Mr. Hoffman served in the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Iowa State University.He married Vanessa Carolyn Weekley Hoffman in Walterboro, S.C., on Jan. 13, 1944. She died Jan. 23, 2003.Survivors include a son, James B. Jr., Houston; three daughters, Carol Hoffman, Lawrence, Jenny Wolff, Leawood, and Mary Hoffman Ervin, Junction City; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.The family will meet friends following services Wednesday.The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the Mark Twain Home Foundation, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent to <a href="mailto:info@warrenmcelwain.com">info@warrenmcelwain.com</a>, subject: Hoffman.
