Robert Edward Sweaney

Services for Robert Edward Sweaney, 69, Oskaloosa, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oskaloosa United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Oskaloosa.Mr. Sweaney died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at his home.He was born March 27, 1936, in Cedar Vale, the son of Olin Riley and Emma Elizabeth Kurtz Sweaney.He graduated from Argentine High School in Kansas City, Kan., received an associate’s degree in law enforcement from Kansas City, Kan., Community College in 1976 and attended Wichita State University. He lived in the Oskaloosa area for 28 years.Mr. Sweaney served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958 during the Korean War and served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1958 to 1962. He was a detective for the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Department, where he served as captain of detectives for 23 years and retired in 1990. He also was a firefighter for the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department and worked for the Jefferson County Service Organization for several years. He was a member of Oskaloosa United Methodist Church.He married Virginia Lee Rankin on Nov. 13, 1967, in Miami, Okla. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Steven J. Roper, Piper; three daughters, Vicky L. Hogue, Oskaloosa, Kathy L. Roper, Leavenworth, and Kristi L. Bailey, Eudora; a brother, Richard Sweaney, Lee’s Summit, Mo., a half-brother, James Bidwell, Freeman, Mo.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Barnett Funeral Home in Oskaloosa.The family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Assn., in care of the funeral home, P.O.
