Paul N. Shivel 1931 - 2005
Memorial services for Paul N. Shivel, 74, Lawrence, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. A private family inurnment will be later.Mr. Shivel died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born Sept. 1, 1931, in Coffeyville, the son of Paul and Dorothy Stegal Shivel. The family moved to Great Bend, and he graduated from Great Bend High School in 1949 and attended Drake University.Mr. Shivel was active in Lawrence real estate and was a past president of the Lawrence Board of Realtors. He was a fundraiser for religious studies at Kansas University. He also owned and operated Great Lanes Resurfacing.He was a 3rd-class storekeeper in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, from 1950 to 1954. He served on the USS Oriskany.Mr. Shivel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.He married Barbara Peterson on July 6, 1963, in Denver. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Walter, Riverdale, Utah; a daughter, Angela Blanchard, Shawnee; a sister, Joan Bachman, Greeley, Colo.; and three grandchildren.A brother, David, died in August 2005.The family will greet friends after the service.The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses or the church, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent to <a href="mailto:info@warrenmcelwain.com">info@warrenmcelwain.com</a>, subject: Shivel.
