Mabel Johnine Ray Remmers

Services for Mabel Johnine Ray Remmers, 97, Topeka, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Topeka. A lunch will follow the services.Mrs. Remmers died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at McCrite Plaza Retirement Community. She was born Sept. 23, 1908, in Marion, the daughter of Inez Ellis and James A. Ray. She attended Southwestern College in Winfield and received an English degree from the University of California at Berkeley. She attended the Bush Conservatory of Music and Drama in Chicago. She received a social work certificate from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree in social work from Washington University in St. Louis. She trained in psychotherapy at the Menninger School of Psychiatry.Mrs. Remmers was a lifelong actress. She was a social worker and taught drama and journalism in Kansas and Colorado. She was a member of the Topeka Civic Theater, where she was elected into the Hall of Fame. She was also a member of the Washburn Players, Players Company of Topeka, Dale Easton Players, Minerva Club and Dr. Karl Menninger’s study group.Survivors include a son, Bill Remmers, Lawrence; and a granddaughter.The family invites guests to bring musical instruments, stories and poems to the lunch at the church following the services.The family suggests memorials to the Topeka Civic Theater, attn.: Carole Ries, 3028 S.W.
