Evelyn Joann Barnes

Memorial services for Evelyn Joann Barnes, 75, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Central United Methodist Church. She donated her body to the University of Kansas Hospital. Inurnment will be at a later date.Ms. Barnes died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born July 8, 1930, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Charles Everett and Myrtle Irene Billingsly Gray. She has lived in Lawrence since 1967.She was a professional cook at Alpha Phi Sorority, Sirloin Club, Don’s Steakhouse, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and Naismith Hall at Kansas University. She retired in 1992. She was a member of T.O.P.S. club and Central United Methodist Church of Lawrence.She married Lester Barnes on July 30, 1950, in Hutchinson. They divorced in 1981, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 17, 1997.She is survived by two sons, Kevin, Ozawkie, and Randy, Lawrence; a daughter, Jamie Blaylock, Lawrence; a brother, Charles “Chuck” Gray Jr., Tolleson, Ariz.; a sister, Novella Millikan, Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Charles, in 1962.The family suggests memorials to the Evelyn Barnes Memorial Fund, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, 66044.Online condolences may be sent to info@warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Barnes.
