Services for Miriam Ellis McNown, 88, Portland, will be Sept. 30 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence.Mrs. McNown died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, in Portland, of pneumonia.She was born Feb. 23, 1917, in Concordia, the daughter of Robert W. and Beth Ellis.She attended Kansas University. She was a resident of Minneapolis; La Jolla, Calif;, Iowa City, Iowa; Grenoble, France; Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Lawrence for 40 years, and briefly in Ibadan, Nigeria; Paris; Nairobi, Kenya; Washington, D.C., and finally Portland for five years.Mrs. McNown worked for the editor of the Concordia Blade-Emporia newspaper for a year. She was a member of P.E.O. for more than 60 years, where she served as president of the local AZ Chapter. She was also a member of Zodiac, a women's study club, and University Women's Club.She married John S. McNown. They divorced.Survivors include two sons, Mark McNown, Portland, and Robert McNown, Seattle; a daughter, Cynthia Maloney, Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Harriette Diven, Castle Rock, Colo.; a brother, Atlee R. Ellis, Cocoa, Fla.; and two granddaughters.A son, Stephen McNown, died in 1968.The family suggests memorials to the Stephen McNown & Miriam McNown Memorial Fund for international student exchanges, sent in care of the University of Kansas Endowment Assn., P.O.
