Genevieve C. Balyeat

Services for Genevieve C. Balyeat, 99, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at John Knox Village Chapel in Lee’s Summit, Mo. Private graveside services will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Blue Mound. Mrs. Balyeat died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at John Knox Village. She was born June 20, 1908, in Leonard, Okla., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George N. Clarke. She grew up on a farm in Linn County. She graduated from Mound City High School in 1926 and Kansas University in 1930. Mrs. Balyeat taught at high schools in Westphalia and Blue Mound before moving to Lawrence in 1946. She worked at the Journal-World for a number of years and retired as women’s editor in 1973. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, West Side Study Club, Phenix Club, Nu Rho Chapter of Kappa Kappa Iota, Chapter CW of P.E.O. and Douglas County Retired Teachers Association. She also was an honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi and Tau Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa.She married Kent Balyeat in 1935. He died in 1968.Mrs. Balyeat also was preceded in death by a brother, William Clarke.Survivors include a sister, Lillian Shippee and husband George, John Knox Village; two nieces, Dorothy Schreiber and Elizabeth Yelton; and two nephews, Dana Clarke and Richard Clarke.The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until services Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests memorials to John Knox Hospice or Wall Street Christian Church in Mound City. They may be sent in care of Langsford Funeral Home, 115 S.W. Third St., Lee’s Summit, MO 64063.
